As a Coventry City fan who witnessed what many consider our finest ever moment in the clubs history – winning the FA Cup in 1987, when the cup was considered the greatest cup competition in the world and watched by a worldwide television audience, in todays modern game the competition seems to have lost it’s lustre or has it?
This weekend has seen the 3rd round of this seasons competition commence and this season all games have been settled in a single tie. Games that finished all square in 90 mins went to 30 mins extra time and still square were decided by penalties, mainly due to the fixture backlog caused by COVID 19.
However this weekend has provided us with shocks, weakened sides, youth teams playing due to 1st team squads isolating and it was a fairy tale start for young Aston Villa player Louie Barry who scored a superb equaliser for them against the current League Champions Liverpool who played pretty much a first choice team, unfortuantely for Villa they went on to lose 4 – 1 on the night.
Saturdays games saw Non-league Chorley Town take on Derby County of the Championship who were forced to play a mix of u23’s and u18 players. Premier League Everton were taken to extra time against Championship Rotherham United before running out 2 – 1 winners. Blackpool of League 1 took on Premier League West Bromich Albion and battled them throughout and after a 2 – 2 draw in 90 mins took them to extra time and came out victorious beating them 3 – 2 on penalties.
Sunday there was time for one more magic game in the FA Cup, Premier League side Leeds United traved to West Sussex to face League 2 Crawley Town. Leeds fielded a strong side but went down 3 – 0, Crawley even had the luxury of bringing on a 33 year old reality Star Mark Wright! for a 3 minute cameo (nice bit of shithousery).
At the time of writing Non League Marine are playing Premier League Tottenham which is currently 0 – 0 after 17 minutes so maybe there is more magic to report later. (edit – 30 mins gone and Tottenham lead by 3 – 0) (further edit – 16 year old Alfie Devine a 2nd half substitute for Tottenham has just taken Tottenhams lead to 5 – 0)
